The Greater North Conference of the MN Junior BASS Nation held its first high school fishing tournament of the season on Island Lake north of Duluth June 9. Twenty-seven Northern Conference teams showed up hoping to earn school bragging rights in addition to points in an attempt to qualify for the State Tourney later in the season. The teams were greeted in the morning by calm seas and sun, but by late afternoon the temp had dropped, the wind was whipping and the rain was pouring down.
The Thunderhawks sent six teams of two anglers each to the event. Fishing started at 8 a.m. and finished up at 4 p.m. When the final bag of fish was brought to the scales, the Thunderhawks had two teams in the top five and big bass of the tournament.
Easton Fothergill and Nick Dumke brought in five pounds. Included in their bag was a monster 20 inch smallmouth weighing 4.36 pounds taking the “Big Bass” trophy for the event.
The Thunderhawk team of Wyatt Ritter and “Chach” Olson brought in an awesome bag of fishing weighing 13.67 pounds and good for fifth place.
Following close behind was the Thunderhawk team consisting of Jack Cleveland and Zach Wilke placing in eighth place with a bag of fish weighing 11.28 pounds.
Fishing their first tournament together, the Thunderhawk team of Jasen Arola and Brandon Madsen took the 16th spot with four nice bass.
The teams reported catching fish on a variety of presentations including tubes, jerkbaits, Ned rigs jigs and crankbaits.
The next stops for the Thunderhawks include a SATT event on Lake Minnetonka and SAF/TBF Nationals on Pickwick lake in Florence, Ala.
