Aug. 2, 2009-The Rapids Legion baseball team thumped Willmar 14-4 in state action in New Ulm. Billy Shaw was winning pitcher while Kyle Kleinendorst had three hits, scored three runs and drove in another. In another game, Rapids tipped Excelsior 12-11 as Mike Olson was winning pitcher. Kleinendorst had two home runs and six RBIs while Mike Halling had two hits with a solo homer. Rapids lost the opener 15-4 to Hamline Purple as Kleinendorst was losing pitcher and Kleinendorst and ournoyer each had two RBIs.
Aug. 2, 2009-Gunn Park is the host site for this year’s Minnesota State Little League Tournament.
Aug. 5, 2009-Mankato National eliminated the Rapids Legion team from the state tournament with a 4-1 win. Billy Shaw was losing pitcher and Jake Bischoff had two hits.
Aug. 5, 2009-East Tonka South downed Itasca 7-6 to win the state Little League baseball championship in action at Gunn Park in Grand Rapids.
Aug. 5, 2009-The Greenway Gold 14U summer fastpitch softball team captured the state title in Buffalo. Members of the team are Jessie Kujala, Katrina Kyllander, Ashley Troumbly, SaraBeth Reed, Kayla McInerney, Erin Erdman, Emily Kessler, Heather Lowe, Taylor Orhn, Lanie McCauley, Kelcie Ingle, and Maddy Hynek. Coaches are Kyle Erickson and Jen McInerney.
Aug. 5, 2009-GRHS graduate and North Dakota State University’s Brynn Joki recently participated in the 22nd annual Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association All-Star match. Coached by her mother, Beth Joki, she was named the Most Valuable Player.
Aug. 5, 2009-Scott Behling was the top male and Kelsey Magnuson was the top female in the Tall Timber Days 5K Race.

July 31, 1994-Four men and one woman will be inducted into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame on Sept. 10. Joining Joan Richardson as the second woman in the Hall of Fame will be Patti Fitzgerald. Others to be inducted are Bill McDonald, Jim Beier, Jerry Beier, and Scot Kleinendorst.
July 31, 1994-Area professional canoe racer Al Rudquist teamed with Scott Nesvold to win the Klarbrun Classic at St. Cloud. He then teamed with Mike Vincent to claim the J.B. LaLibertie Memorial Canoe Race at Cumberland House, Sask., Canada.
Aug. 3, 1994-Sean Kaneski of St. Cloud was the male winner and Karen Copeland of Minneapolis was the female winner in searing heat in the grueling long course of the Timberman Triathlon.
Aug. 3, 1994-The Rapids VFW baseball team won four straight games to earn a berth at state.
Aug. 3, 1994-Hibbing won the Itasca Area Legion baseball playoffs as it downed Grand Rapids 5-0. Paul Ciochetto was winning pitcher and also had two hits. Mark Hanson had two hits for Rapids.
Aug. 3, 1994-Joel Goeden, who will be a junior at Grand Rapids High School this fall, finished second in the National Greco-Roman Wrestling Tournament at Fargo, N.D., at 165 pounds. Chris Moen of Rapids won two matches.

July 31, 1969-The Ray’s softball team beat the Amber Flow team from Duluth 2-0 in the Hoyt Lakes Tournament. It then lost to Paul Bunyan of Duluth 6-0.
July 31, 1969-The Grand Rapids Eagles thumped the Hibbing Greyhounds 10-2. Tom Peluso was the winning pitcher and Tom Epperly had four hits. Don Anderson, Bob Anderson, Bob Streetar and Andrews each had two hits.
Aug. 4, 1969-Walleyes in Big Balsam Lake went wild for Dave and Pauline Lake of Robbinsdale as they pulled in six big walleyes weighing a total of 36 pounds, 11-ounces to pace the entire walleye competition in the Rapids Tackle Fishing Contest.
Aug. 4, 1969-The LaPrairie girls softball team beat Coleraine 4-2 for the championship of District 316. The team has been undefeated in 27 straight games. Members of the team are Becky Marok, Donna Lutterman, Chris Bruns, Sandy Lutterman, Julie Moren, Sherrie Lutterman, Beth Reid, Nancy Reidm Sheryl Lempke, LeAnn Lempke, Linda Korhonen, Joan Samuelson, Debbie Bruns, Sue Walters, Beverly Whitman, Joan Ellis, Diedre Sobtzak, Cathy Cromell and Sharon Bruns.
Aug. 4, 1969-Harry “The Horsethief” Johnson of Grand Rapids swept everything in sight at Grand Rapids Speedway as he took time trials for Modfieds, the heat and the feature.
