Sept. 6, 2009-The ICC volleyball team lost three of four matches. The Vikings were led by Gina Bounds, MIsty Flynn, Katie Hood, Kjera Gustafson and Leigh Peterson.

Sept. 6, 2009-The T’Hawk football team fell to Farmington 37-14. Taylor Mathias and Austin Pohlen scored the Rapids touchdowns.

Sept. 6, 2009-The Rapids boys soccer team lost to Duluth Central 2-1. Josiah Aultman scored for the Thunderhawks.

Sept. 9, 2009-Derek Rolle of Grand Rapids continued his dominance at the Vern Fryklund Northwest Invitational in Hibbing by winning his sixth championship since 2001.

Sept. 9, 2009-In its first game as a combined football program, the Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin Titans defeated Braham 41-24. Dylan Peterson and Carver Nelson both gained more than 100 yards on the ground in the win.

Sept. 4, 1994-The Rapids girls tennis team lost to Bemidji 6-1. The lone point was picked up by Lindsay Clayton in second singles.

Sept. 4, 1994-St. Cloud Tech took advantage of numerous Grand Rapids turnovers to beat the Indians 28-22. Mark Hanson, Craig Cint and Brent Holte scored the Rapids touchdowns.

Sept. 4, 1994-The Stamson and Blair women’s softball team took first in the 41-team district slow pitch tournament. Members of the team are Beth Joki, Amanda Longtin, Jamie Melquist, Heidi Madsen, Jennie Wright, Amy Earhart, Anne Bylkas, Barb Neitzke, Andrea Blair, Katie Schroeder, Tina Henrichsen and Renee Racine.

Sept. 4, 1994-Those to be inducted into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame are Patti Fitzgerald, Bill “Mac” McDonald, twins Jerry and Jim Beier, and Scot Kleinendorst

Sept. 4, 1994-In area football action, Crosby-Ironton tipped Greenway 19-18 as Bill Shaughnessy and Nate Hofer led the Raiders while Bigfork pounded Pillager 45-0. Neil Chiabotti, Josh Lamppa and Zach Meyer led the Huskies. Tower-Soudan tipped Hill City 16-14 despite the play of the Hornets’ Butch Murphy. Deer River beat Moose Lake-Willow River 29-8 as Mike Fairbanks, Steve Thompson, Jeff DeWitt, and Nathan Linse stood out. Nashwauk-Keewatin blanked Barnum 26-0 as Jeff Marolt scored three touchdowns.

Sept. 7, 1994-The Indian volleyball team rebounded from a 2-1 deficit to beat Mesabi East. Amie Knutson, Hillary Edwards, Gina Zakariasen, Kelly Camp and Heidi Madsen stood out.

Sept. 7, 1994-The Grand Rapids Merchants men’s softball team too first in the National League and won the city championship. Members of the team include Jim Stephens, Matt Purdy, Gary Gustason, Mike McInerney, Don Duell, Kelly Stephens, Jace Reed, Ron Holum, Chuck Brewster, Rick Haynes, Brett Holum, Mike Lessman, Mike Sonaglia, Derek Vekich, Mike Vekich and Steve Anderson.

Sept. 4, 1969-The First National Bank of Coleraine team captured the Pokegama Men’s Club title. Members of the team are Lou Barle, Dick White, Bob Shaw, Al Kosak and Vince Nyberg.

Sept. 8, 1969-Kermit Matyas defended his Pokegama golf title by defeating Frank Ericson.

Sept. 8, 1969-Hibbing capitalized on two pass interceptions, four fumbles, the strong leg of Mike Tintor and the breakaway speed of George Spanish for a 16-0 victory over Grand Rapids in football action.

Sept. 8, 1969-Greenway beat Chisholm 33-0 as Bob Lynch had two touchdown passes and ran for another. Bart Trebnick had two touchdown receptions.
