Itasca Community College recently announced the hiring of Amber Smith as the head women’s basketball coach and Joe Umlauf as the head wrestling coach.

Smith returns to ICC to begin her coaching career. She attended ICC for two years, from 2015-2017 and went on to finish her degree at St. Scholastica (Duluth), graduating with a Bachelor in Arts Degree for Educational Studies. She plans to teach in the elementary school as a paraprofessional while coaching.

Smith played college basketball for both ICC and St. Scholastica. During her time spent as a Viking she was a starter both seasons and named a Player of the Week in 2015. She was MCAC All-Northern Division Honorable Mention during her 2016-2017 season.

Smith is a coach that is passionate about the game and excited to watch players grow and develop throughout their time spent at ICC. She loves the outdoors, traveling and spending time with her family.

Umlauf served as the assistant wrestling coach for the Vikings this past season at ICC. The program qualified six wrestlers for the national tournament, which was the highest number in the region.

“I am extremely excited and fortunate to be taking over as the head wrestling coach of the Itasca Community College wrestling program,” Umlauf said. “This is a storied wrestling program and I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for the program and to be a part of it. I want to add to that history of success by setting high expectations for excellence not only on the wrestling mat, but off the mat with encouraging an emphasis on student athletes’ academics, community involvement, and most importantly with the character development of these young men. I am hoping to bring a high level of energy and enthusiasm to the program, while helping these student athletes develop into high quality individuals who will have successful lives once their time at Itasca Community College is done.”

Prior to joining the Vikings, Umlauf was a scholarship athlete at North Dakota State University from 2013-2017, including time as a starter. North Dakota State University is a Division I, Big 12 Conference team. Umlauf is a graduate from NDSU with two undergraduate degrees in Physical Education and Health Education with a minor in Psychology and a variety of coaching and athletic certifications.

Before college, Umlauf was born and raised in Wausau, Wisc. where he began wrestling at the age of four. He had success growing up and in college being multiple-time state place winner, multiple-time state finalist, and national champion in high school. Umlauf was also a part of a Division I Wisconsin team state champion team his senior year in high school in 2012-2013.

Umlauf has served as a coach for more than 10 years in a variety of capacities. “I have coached in a variety of different settings and locations and across all age groups,” he said. “I’ve coached in the midwest and the east coast. I’ve coached rural small town athletes to inner city athletes and I’ve coached pre-k to college. With these varied experiences, I believe I have developed the ability and insight to coach athletes of all backgrounds and skill levels.”

The ICC wrestling program has seventeen verbal commits to their wrestling program.
