It was a strong showing for the Greenway boys hockey team to open Section 7A play as the Raiders cruised to a 7-1 win over North Shore Tuesday to secure a spot in the section semifinals.

The No. 3 seeded Raiders (13-13) play No. 2 Duluth Denfeld Saturday at Amsoil Arena in Duluth at 8 p.m. In the previous meeting between the teams early in the season (Dec. 4), Denfeld came away with a 4-3 overtime win.

On Tuesday, Greenway dominated possession, outshooting the Storm 48-22. Ben Troumbly had a hat trick for the Raiders, while Donte Lawson scored a pair of goals and had two assists.

The Raiders got on the board with a score from Erza Carlson at 5:28 in the first. Greenway took advantage of power play later on with Troumbly scoring at 11:58 in the frame.

In the second period, the Raiders picked up a quick score, 33 seconds in from Lawson.

Troumbly netted his second goal six minutes into the period before North Shore’s Will Olson scored to make it 4-1 Raiders’ advantage.

Greenway kept up its pressure on Storm goalie Cameron Roy and added two more goals in the second from Brock Trboyevich at 9:11 and Lawson at 9:34.

Troumbly completed the hat trick at 12:25 in the third period.

Logan Wright had 16 saves for the Raiders and Tyler Penney came in late to stop five shots. Roy had 41 saves for the Storm.

In the other 7A semifinal, No. 1 Hermantown faces No. 4 Virginia.

Rapids falls to CEC in 7AA quarters

In the Section 7AA quarterfinals in Cloquet, Grand Rapids fell to Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 4-1, ending their season.

The Thunderhawks were able to outshoot the Lumberjacks, 33-30, however Grand Rapids trailed 3-0 before scoring their first goal with just more than seven minutes remaining in the contest.

Cloquet jumped out to an early lead three and a half minutes into the game with a goal from Landon Langenbrunner. Derian Durand then scored at the eight-minute mark to extend CEC’s lead to 2-0.

It remained a two-score game until late in the second period when Langenbrunner scored his second goal with just 17 seconds left in the frame.

Grand Rapids was able to break through with a score from Maccrea Murphy midway through the third period, however the Lumberjacks were quick to answer with a goal from Gavin Rasmussen a minute later.

Braeden Holcomb and Jack Peart had the assists for the Thunderhawks on Murphy’s goal. Carter Clafton had 26 saves for Grand Rapids, while CEC’s Owen Carlson had 32.

The Thunderhawks finished the season 9-16.
