The Grand Rapids boys hockey team picked up a 3-2 upset over No. 11 ranked Wayzata Saturday on the road.

The Thunderhawks’ Kobie Koenig scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner five minutes into the third period.

Carter Clafton was strong between the pipes for Grand Rapids as he stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced.

The Thunderhawks were limited to just a shot in the first period, however picked up their play outshooting the Trojans the rest of the game.

After a scoreless first period, Jack Peart put Grand Rapids on the board with a goal midway through the second frame. Wayzata tied the game late with a score from Luc Monney with 36 seconds remaining in the period.

Koenig netted his first goal two minutes into the third period, then Wayzata answered with a score from Joe Tomczik a minute later.

Koenig’s go-ahead goal came off the power play at 4:53.

Grand Rapids had assists from six different players which included John Bonner, Braeden Holcomb, Hunter Bischoff, Brandon Goehring, Maccrea Murphy and Cooper Brodzinski.

The Thunderhawks (7-15) were at Bemidji Tuesday.
