On Friday, the Grand Rapids Legion baseball team played a double header in Superior and the two teams won one game apiece. Superior took the first game 13-8 and Post 60 took the second one 12-8.
In game one, Superior took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning and added another in the bottom of the second inning to make it 2-0.
Grand Rapids got on the board in the top of the third inning with Luke Kinnunen drawing a walk then advancing to second from a Wyatt Holcomb single and eventually getting all the way home on a fielder’s choice and a groundout. Superior responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own making the score 5-1.
In the fourth inning, Post 60 went down on four hitters and Superior put up three more runs on three hits to make it 8-1.
Grand Rapids finally found multiple runs in the fifth inning. Post 60 scored five runs on singles from Gideon Beck and Holcomb, a double from Grant Anderson, three walks, and an error. Superior then left two runners on base in the bottom of the fifth and failed to score any runs making the score 8-6 in favor of Superior.
Grand Rapids finished successfully crawling their way back into the game with two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Holcomb and Anderson’s singles helped tie the game at 8-8. Superior came back strong in the bottom of the sixth and crushed the comeback with five runs. This led to the final score being 13-8 as Post 60 could not score any more runs in the seventh.
Both Beck and Anderson finished the game two for four with a double and single. Holcomb had three hits and scored twice. Brooks Bachmann made up the rest of Grand Rapids’ nine hits with two singles.
Game two started out very well for Grand Rapids. Two singles from Beck and a single from Owen Linder along with three walks led to Post 60 putting five runs up in the top of the first inning. Superior went down on three hitters in the bottom of the first to make the score 5-0 after one.
Grand Rapids added one more run in the second inning off of an Isaac Gustafson RBI single. Superior scored four runs of their own in the second due to Post 60 making multiple errors in the field pushing the score to 6-4.
In the third, Grand Rapids scored a couple more runs on an Anderson RBI double and a passed ball. Post 60 then allowed two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a walk and another error making it 8-6 in favor of Grand Rapids.
Grand Rapids did not score any runs in the fourth, fifth, or sixth innings, meanwhile, Superior added a pair of runs. The score was then tied at eight heading into the last inning.
Grand Rapids scored four more runs on two walks and singles from Beck, Anderson and Linder. Post 60 allowed one more hit in the bottom of the seventh inning, but three fly-outs would result in the end of the game and a final score of 12-8.
Beck went three for three with three singles, a walk, and a hit by pitch. Anderson went two for four with a double and a single as well as a walk. Linder also finished two for four but with two singles and a walk. Bachmann was the winning pitcher having pitched one and a third innings allowing a single hit. Alex McBride pitched the other five and two thirds innings allowing four hits with six strikeouts and four walks.
After these two games, Grand Rapids has two wins and two losses this season.
