The Grand Rapids American Legion Post 60 baseball team headed to Duluth to face Lakeview on Wednesday. Post 60 lost the first game 6-0 and came back in the second one with an 11-8 victory.
In game one, the score remained at zeros until Lakeview broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs on two hits and three walks. The score then remained 4-0 until Lakeview added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with two doubles. Jaxon Edwards completed the shutout in the seventh inning against Grand Rapids to complete the 6-0 victory while allowing five Post 60 hits.
Grant Anderson, Owen Linder, Wyatt Zuehlke, Collin Dibb and Wyatt Holcomb each had a single in the loss. Gideon Beck was the losing pitcher with four innings pitched, three walks, three strikeouts and four allowed hits.
The second game was much better for Grand Rapids. Post 60 put two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Linder got on base from a fielder’s choice, then advanced all the way around the bases from multiple wild pitches to score. Zuehlke scored the other run from reaching on a walk and scoring on a Dibb double. In the bottom of the first inning, Lakeview added a run of their own to make the score 2-1.
The second inning was a hitting spree from both teams. Grand Rapids got five runs in the top of the inning that were bolstered by a Zuehlke two RBI double and a Dibb two RBI double. Lakeview came back in the bottom of the inning with four runs on five hits. Grand Rapids then failed to score in the third inning, but Lakeview added one more run, making the score 7-6 in favor of Post 60.
The score remained this way until the top of the sixth inning when Grand Rapids had another big inning with four runs, but this time with only a single hit. Linder, Zuehlke, Dibb and Austin Moen got the Post 60 runs. Lakeview again came back with a pair of their own in the bottom of the inning to push the score to 11-8. Both teams failed to score in the seventh inning, resulting in this being the final score.
Grant Anderson was the winning pitcher with five innings pitched, three runs allowed on eight hits, four strikeouts and a single walk. Dibb went two for three at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs while Zuehlke went one for two with a double and two RBIs.
Post 60 plays a double header against Superior next on Friday in Superior.
