GRAND RAPIDS — Kyle Smith of Duluth was the men’s winner and Laura Hagley of Hanover, N.H., was the top female in the second annual Running the Rapids Half Marathon which was conducted Saturday, Aug. 24, in Grand Rapids.
Smith completed the 13.1-mile course in a time of 1:14.59 to win the race. Ben Mackay of Bovey was second in 1:21.48 while Nathan Waech of Grand Rapids placed third in 1:25.34. Rounding out the top five were Billy Sackett of Deer River, fourth in 1:26.32, and Eric Otto of Grand Rapids, fifth in 1:28.27.
Hagley completed the course in a time of 1:20.01. Rachel Miesbauer, Grand Rapids, a coach for the Grand Rapids High School cross country team, was second in 1:31.05 while Naomi Fillbrandt of Bovey finished third in 1:34.03. Jennifer Lacarelli of Hibbing was fourth in 1:36.12 while Kelly Wier of Grand Rapids was fifth in 1:36.15.
In the relay portion of the race, Rachel Metelak and Ann Marie Huttner combined to place first with a time of 1:37.15. Nathan Metelak and Rick Smith were second in 1:41.18 while the duo of Wayne Hryniuk and Rodney Searles were third in 1:49.37.
The top male finisher in the 5K race was Ian Anderson, 14, of Grand Rapids, with a time of 20 minutes and 45 seconds.
Erik Andersen was second in 21:50 while Pierce Kvien was third in 22:21. Brendan Grubbs placed fourth in 22:35 and Jason Jorgenson rounded out the top five with a time of 22:36.
Serena Sullivan of Hibbing who also is the Hibbing High School girls track and field coach was the top female in the 5K as she finished with a time of 20:58.
Erika Mayerle was second in 26:17 followed by Jamie Beer, 26:22, Mariah Nelson, 26:57, and Haley Casey-Miller in fifth in a time of 27:37.
