Legendary Grand Rapids High School baseball coach Bob Streetar will be honored on Friday, June 21, at the annual Grand Rapids American Legion Invitational Tournament. A brief ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. whereby Legion Field will be renamed, Bob Streetar Field at American Legion Park. A social gathering will immediately follow the ceremony at a site yet to be determined.
Streetar, a 1955 Grand Rapids High School graduate, was a letter-winner in baseball, basketball, football and track during his high school career. He graduated from St. Cloud State University where he lettered in both baseball and basketball. After college, Bob signed with the St. Louis Cardinals baseball organization and played in their minor league system.
Once returning to Grand Rapids, he was a high school mathematics teacher and served as the head baseball, basketball and gymnastics coach. His high school baseball teams won 12 region championships and were the state champions in 1978 and 1984.
Streetar also coached the American Legion Baseball team to nine district titles and the State American Legion Baseball championship in 1975. He amassed nearly 500 high school wins throughout his baseball coaching career.
Along with being awarded the Dick Seibert Baseball Award in 1989, Streetar has also been named as Minnesota Baseball Coach of the Year. He has been inducted into the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame, the Minnesota High School Hall of Fame, the St. Cloud State Hall of Fame and the Grand Rapids High School Sports Hall of Fame.
Streetar dedicated more than three decades of effort on and off the field to put Grand Rapids on the map for excellence in high school, Legion and VFW baseball in the state of Minnesota. He taught all of his players to respect the field and always leave it in better shape than when they arrived. He himself spent long hours at Legion Field ensuring it was meticulously groomed and in the best shape it could be. Due in large part to his efforts, Legion Field has always been recognized statewide as the crown jewel of baseball diamonds.
The renaming of Legion Field to “Bob Streetar Field at American Legion Park” is a testament to the dedication and many, many hours of work that Bob put in to the Legion Baseball Field.
Anyone who would like to join in congratulating Streetar is encouraged to attend the ceremony at Legion Field on Friday, June 21, at 7 p.m. Contact Mike Johnson with any questions about the induction ceremony and social gathering at 218-259-5495 or firstname.lastname@example.org
