T'hawks fishing team

The Grand Rapids Thunderhawk Fishing Team kicked off the tournament season Saturday, June 1 on Gull Lake north of Brainerd.

The first event of the year was a SATT (Student Angler Tournament Trail) event and it follows the CRR (Catch Record Release) format. The team’s record via pictures the weight of their seven best fish. The pictures and weights are recorded and tallied via a phone app.

The Thunderhawks sent five teams to compete in the 100-team event.  At the end of the day the Thunderhawks team of Kobie Koenig and Alex Keranen had risen to the top to claim first place with 23 pounds, 4 ounces of bass. With the win they each received $500 in scholarship money and a birth to the SATT TOC at the end of the season.

The other Thunderhawks teams placed as follows: Derek Broberg/Alex Timm, 22nd place; Easton Fothergill/Nick Dumke, 29th place; Jasen Arola/Brandon Madsen, 43rd place; and Nic Morse/Jace Dorr, 91st place.

Next stop for the team is a B.A.S.S. Northern Conference event Sunday, June 9 on Island Lake near Duluth.
