Dec. 13, 2009-Bemidji defeated the Rapids girls basketball team 71-42 as Kayla Hirt scored 25 points. Jessi Corrick had 15 points for the T’Hawks.

Dec. 13, 2009-Rapids eighth grader Solveig Viren set Section 7A records in the 50 and 100 freestyles and qualified for state as a member of two Thunderhawk relay teams and was named All Iron Range Girls Swimmer of the Year because of it.

Dec. 13, 2009-The Bigfork girls basketball team beat Chisholm 68-28 as Megan Powell scored 28 points.

Dec. 13, 2009-The Rapids boys hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Virginia. Travis Underwood and Duston Schulte scored for the Thunderhawks while Dom DeGuiseppi had 34 saves.

Dec. 13, 2009-Bemidji beat the Lightning girls hockey team 4-3. Dana Gallop had the hat trick for GRG.

Dec. 13, 2009-Virginia defeated the Rapids boys swimming team 107-73. Carter Rohling stood out for Rapids.

Dec. 16, 2009-Rapids’ Zach Bainville won his second Paul Bunyan Invite, this one at 135 pounds. Finalists were Tyler Jobe and Jamison Evans.

Dec. 16, 2009-The Rapids boys basketball team beat Duluth East 88-81 as Eric Stark scored 33 points. Meanwhile, the girls team lost to DeLaSalle 82-48. Jessi Corrick scored 15 for Rapids.

Dec. 16, 2009-The Rapids boys hockey team beat Warroad 5-4. Travis Underwood, Jordan Stejskal, Patrick Moore, A.J. Merritt and Duston Schulte scored for the T’Hawks.

Dec. 16, 2009-The Rapids Nordic ski team competed at Ely. Top boys skier for the T’Hawks was Tyler Gustafson while the top Rapids girl was Solveig Viren.

Dec. 16, 2009-The Rapids Alpine ski team competed at Mont Du Lac. Adam Berkeland was the top Rapids boy skier while the top girl was Rachel Leveile.

Dec. 14, 1994-The Rapids boys swimming team downed Chisholm 115-63 as Brian Dick and Darrin Card led the way.

Dec. 14, 1994-The ICC wrestling team won the Itasca Open. Winning individual crowns for the Vikings were Chad Veenendahl, Tom Ritchie, Jason Widman and Joe Burgess.

Dec. 14, 1994-The Rapids cross country ski team competed at Brainerd with Annie Jorgenson winning the girls race. Paul Eckert was the top boys finisher.

Dec. 14, 1994-In girls basketball play, Hill City beat Deer River 45-41 as Jenny LaSpina scored 28 points for the Hornets. Sarah Ojanen had 14 for the Warriors. Northland-Remer topped Nashwauk-Keewatin 40-26 as Stephanie Bright scored 11 points for the Eagles. Becky Kuusisto had 13 points for the Spartans. Bigfork beat Hill City 58-40 as Erin Johnson scored 13 points. LaSpina had 15 for the Hornets.

Dec. 14, 1994-In area boys basketball play, Crosby-Ironton stopped Deer River 81-59 despite 27 points from the Warriors’ Steve Thompson. Northland-Remer beat Greenway 58-44 as Chris Carlson scored 27 points. Zach State had 12 points for the Raiders. Chisholm beat Nashwauk-Keewatin 76-44 despite 14 points from Spartans’ Vince Gangl. Bigfork downed Blackduck 77-59 as Nate Rounds scored 24 points and Neil Chiabotti added 20.

Dec. 14, 1994-The Rapids hockey team beat Brainerd 5-3 as the Miskovich brothers – Pete and Aaron – scored third period goals.

Dec. 14, 1994-The Rapids boys basketball team won its first game of the season 63-38 over Mesabi East as Mason Pender scored 17 points .

Dec. 14, 1994-The Rapids girls cage team lost to Duluth Denfeld 63-59 despite 14 points from the Indians’ Jackie Blair. Jennifer Ells had 36 points for the Hunters.

Dec. 18, 1994-The Rapids girls gymnastics team beat Hibbing in a dual meet as Abby Kent won all five of the individual events.

Dec. 18, 1994-Former Grand Rapids athlete Jeremy Goeden is a freshman on the University of Minnesota wrestling team.

Dec. 15, 1969-Between 100 and 500 snowmobilers are expected in Grand Rapids as the first Minnesota State Snowmobile Championship Races are held at the Itasca County Fairground track.

Dec. 15, 1969-Gary Baker and Jim Mazzitelli, teammates on the ISJC squad two years ago, are together again wrestling for Drake University. Mazzitelli is a co-captain.

Dec. 15, 1969-Jerry Snetsinger, Tom Campanero and Al Goeden won individual titles at the Sioux Invitational in Grand Forks, N.D.

Dec. 15, 1969-James L. (Chick) Berardo, 46, Taconite, former professional hockey player, died at his home.

Dec. 15, 1969-The Rapids hockey team lost to Hibbing 5-4 in overtime as Graebner scored the winner. The Indians beat Virginia 4-3 as Dave Clafton scored the winning goal with 35 seconds remaining.

Dec. 15, 1969-The Rapids basketball team lost to Hibbing 74-69 as Mike Tintor scored 28 points. Ron Gauthier had 27 for Rapids.

Dec. 15, 1969-In area cage action, Bigfork beat Buhl 58-56 as Wade Hensel scored 31 points. Greenway lost to Chisholm 73-52 despite 16 points for Paul Zagar. Nashwauk-Keewatin bombed BIwabik 87-57 while Gilbert beat Deer River 66-49 despite 20 points from the Warriors’ Mark Wohlrabe. Bigfork also beat Hill City 47-43 as Hensel scored 21. Steve Lathrop had 10 for the Hornets.

Dec. 18, 1969-The Rapids basketball team is preparing for Bigfork while the wrestling team will take on undefeated Aitkin.

Dec. 13, 1944-Plans for a possible county hockey league and for a county basketball league will be considered.

Dec. 13, 1944-The Rapids basketball team lost to Morgan Park of Duluth 22-13.

Dec. 13, 1944-A Cohasset women’s basketball team has been organized named the Merry Widows. Women playing on the team include Mrs. Robert Stokes, Mrs. Roland Skogman, Mrs. Marvin Splettstoesser, Mrs. Frank Gibbs, Mrs. Gusta Johnson, Misses Evelyn Seeling, Ruth Carter, Millie Perkins, Betty Perkins and Betty Morency. Mrs. Howard Dibley is the coach.

100 years ago

Dec. 17, 1919-It doesn’t pay to violate game laws in Itasca County. George Moores of Bass Lake, north of Cohasset, shot a moose in May 1918. The game warden finally caught up with him and he was fined $100 and costs.

Dec. 17, 1919-The GRHS basketball team beat Mt. Iron 11-10. With more experience, coach Aaberg expects is men to make a strong run for the championship.
