GRAND RAPIDS — The Grand Rapids High School boys hockey team outshot Holy Family by 20 on Saturday but couldn’t come up with a tying goal as Holy Family topped the Thunderhawks 4-2 in action Saturday at the IRA Civic Center in Grand Rapids.

The teams were tied at 1-1 after one period as Grand Rapids received a power play goal from Jack Peart while Spencer Lewin tallied for Holy Family.

Holy Family scored the only two goals of the second period – by Ben Reddan and Mark Lund – to take a 3-1 lead into the final period.

Peart scored his second power play goal just 2:59 into the third period to pull the Thunderhawks to within 3-2. But Grand Rapids was unable to tally the tying goal and Nick Blood scored an empty net goal with 32 seconds remaining to seal the win for Holy Family.

Dylan Halliwill finished with 34 saves in the nets for Holy Family while Carter Clafton kicked out 14 shots for Grand Rapids.

COLERAINE — Holy Family downed the Greenway High School boys hockey team 5-1 in action Friday at Hodgins-Berardo Arena in Coleraine.

Holy Family led 2-0 after one period as Nick Blood scored just 10 seconds into the game and Lucas Jorgenson found the back of the net later in the period.

Grant Limke scored in the second period as Holy Family led 3-0, but Greenway’s Coleman Groshong tallied less than a minute later to cut the Holy Family lead to 3-1 after two periods.

Holy Family received two goals by Trey Fechko in the third period for the 5-1 win.

Dylan Halliwill kicked out 26 shots in the nets for Holy Family while Logan Wright was outstanding in the nets for the Raiders as he was forced to stop 54 shots.

With the loss, Greenway is now 4-7 for the season.

GRAND RAPIDS — The Grand Rapids High School boys basketball team took down Chisago Lakes 74-50 in action Saturday at the Grand Rapids High School Gymnasium.

The Thunderhawks jumped out to a big lead in the first half and led 41-27 at halftime. Grand Rapids outscored Chisago Lakes by 10 points in the second half to cruise to the win.

John Sutherland continued his torrid scoring pace as he had 32 points and nine rebounds for Grand Rapids. Austin Hanson scored 17 points, Easton Fothergill, 10, David Ellies, seven, and Brady Bachmann added six.

Andrew Koehler had 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead Chisago Lakes.

It was the fourth consecutive win for Grand Rapids which is now 8-3 on the season. It played Esko Tuesday night in Grand Rapids. Results of the game will be in Sunday’s edition of the Herald-Review.

GRAND RAPIDS — The Grand Rapids High School boys swimming and diving team placed first in the Grand Rapids Pentangular which was conducted Jan. 3, in Grand Rapids.

The Thunderhawks won with a team score of 388. They were followed by Virginia-Eveleth-Gilbert 361, International Falls 151, Chisholm 132.5, and Proctor 93.5.

Winning events for Grand Rapids were the 200-yard medley relay team of Austin Morrissey, Jake Jacobson, Xander Ogilvie and Michael Fitch (1:48.21); Jacobson in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.54); Morrissey in the 50-yard freestyle (23.76 seconds) and 100-yard butterfly (57.73 seconds); Ayden Aultman in diving (163.50 points); Ben Bartholomew in the 100-yard freestyle (53.30 seconds); Fitch in the 500-yard freestyle (5:25.03); Jacobson in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.14); and the 400-yard freestyle relay comprised of Bartholomew, Morrissey, Fitch and Jacobson (3:33.53).
