GRAND RAPIDS — A good Hermantown Hawks volleyball team invaded the Grand Rapids High School Gymnasium Thursday night and came away with a victory.
Hermantown rallied to win the first game and then won the next two games to come away with a 3-0, 25-23, 25-20, 25-13 win over the Thunderhawks.
In the first game, Grand Rapids jumped out to leads of 10-5 and 13-7 and appeared to be clicking on all cylinders. The Thunderhawks held a 19-16 advantage but Hermantown then took over as it scored the next seven points to take a 23-19 lead. Two hitting errors and two unforced errors by Grand Rapids were instrumental in the Hawks run.
The Thunderhawks fought back as they used a pair of kills from Claire Walsh and a Hermantown hitting error to pull to within 23-22. After a service error gave Hermantown a 24-22 lead, another kill by Walsh cut the lead to 24-23. However, another service error by the Thunderhawks ended the game with the Hawks winning 25-23.
In the second game, Hermantown started strong in taking leads of 7-3 and 13-7. Grand Rapids did not make a serious run for the remainder of the game as the Hawks won 25-20.
Hermantown took control of the third and final game from the start and rolled to a 25-13 victory.
The Thunderhawks played at a tournament in the Twin Cities over the weekend and they will be at Hibbing for a match on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

DULUTH — The Grand Rapids High School boys soccer lost a tough match in Duluth on Thursday.
The Thunderhawks dropped a 4-2 match in overtime to Duluth Marshall.
Zac Ortman scored both goals for Grand Rapids while Griffin Otto received assists on both goals.
The Thunderhawks are next in action Tuesday, Sept. 10, when it plays host to Hermantown in a 7 p.m. contest at Noble Hall Field in Grand Rapids.
Deer River 0
DEER RIVER — The Greenway High School volleyball team defeated Deer River 3-0, 25-5, 25-12, 25-6 in action Sept. 3, at Deer River.
Claire Vekich had 12 kills, two blocks and four ace serves for the Raiders while Mikhara Anderson had five ace serves and five digs. Lexi Hammer had 15 set assists and three ace serves.
HIBBING — The Greenway High School volleyball team downed Hibbing 3-0, 25-18, 25-17, 25-20 in play Sept. 5.
Claire Vekich finished with 19 kills, eight digs and four blocks for Greenway and Mikhara Anderson had 13 kills, 13 digs and three blocks. Lexi Hammer recorded 31 set assists and had three ace serves while Hallie Shevich had 13 digs.

Mesabi East 0
GRAND RAPIDS — The Grand Rapids High School girls soccer team had its scoring shoes on Tuesday when it ripped Mesabi East 9-0 in action at Noble Hall Field in Grand Rapids.
The Thunderhawks scored five goals in the first half to put the game away and then added four more in the second half for the decisive victory.
Abbey Birkey and Taelyn Pomplun each had a pair of goals in the first half while Natalee Bushman scored the other for Grand Rapids.
In the second half, four more Thunderhawks got into the scoring. Ellie Tillma, Kenny Martinson, Grace Denny and Makenzie Cole all found the back of the net for Grand Rapids in the half.
Tonia Morgan played in the nets for Grand Rapids and recorded the shutout. She was forced to stop just one shot in the match.
