The 6th annual GRAHA Walleye Shootout, presented by Grand Rapids State Bank, will take place this Saturday, June 29 on Pokegama Lake in Grand Rapids. With a guaranteed first prize payout of $17,000, there is sure to be a good turn out for the one day tournament this year.
The GRAHA Walleye Shootout is the largest one day walleye shootout in the state. Participants compete for a wealth of prizes and for the chance to “Kiss the Cup.” There can be 100 two-man teams entered in the tournament with planned payouts based on a 95 boat field. This year’s tournament has already reached capacity but will accept additional registrations for a waitlist in case another team is unable to come. Expected payout for second place is $6,000 and third place is $3,000. Glen’s Army Navy will present $1,000 for the big fish winner.
Starting Friday evening, a social hour will be held at the IRA Civic Center with dinner served by The Dutchroom from 5-6 p.m. Registration will open at 5 p.m. and a rules meeting and welcome to the participants at 6 p.m. Guest speakers for the dinner will be the Grand Rapids Area Hockey Association and Noah Wilcox from Grand Rapids State Bank.
Saturday is the big day with participant boat check starting at 5:30 a.m. An official welcome, official GPS time and boat return schedule will be announced at 6:15 a.m. The national anthem will be presented at 6:50 a.m. and the tournament will start at 7 a.m. Boats will return between 3-3:30 p.m. A silent auction along with food and beer will be served at 4 p.m. Children are invited to come to a Kids Fishing Clinic at 5 p.m. and boat raffle drawing will also take place at the same time. Weigh in begins at 6:30 p.m. and a DJ/Dance party will be at 8 p.m.
The tournament makes contributions to the Grand Rapids Band and the Grand Rapids Amateur Hockey Association.
Taking home the top prize in 2018 was the team of Randy Topper and Brock Anderson with a 33.42 inch walleye. Second place went to Sean Colter and Dave Hernesman with their 30.88 inch walleye and third place was presented to David Nikkel and Nathan Reed for their 26.31 inch walleye.
