Grand Rapids senior Garrett Beckrich came up just short of repeating as the state Nordic ski champ at the state meet held at Giants Ridge in Biwabik Thursday.

Beckrich carried an 18-second advantage after the opening five-kilometer freestyle race, but was passed by three skiers in the classic race to finish fourth in a combined time of 30:20. St. Paul Academy’s Peter Moore won the event with a combined time of 30:16, Alex Nemeth of Sartell-St. Cloud Cathedral was second in 30:17 and Mora’s Cooper Lennox was third, also finishing in 30:17.

Also competing for Grand Rapids was Sam Stertz who finished 32nd. Stertz had times of 15:49 in the freestyle and 16:38 in the classic for a combined time of 32:27.

The top boys team was Sartell-St. Cloud Cathedral with a score of 407 and Forest Lake was second (397).

In the girls event, Grand Rapids finished 10th as a team with a score of 269. Robbinsdale Armstrong was the top team with a score of 412 and St. Paul Highland Park was second (384).

The Thunderhawks were led by a 29th place finish from Annika Viren. Viren had times of 18:12 in the freestyle and 20:03 in the classic for a combined time of 38:15. Wayzata’s Mara McCollor won the meet with a combined time of 34:51 and Robbinsdale Armstrong’s Lucinda Anderson was second (32:52).

Annika Viren was 43rd for Grand Rapids in 39:02, Lucia Wyland was 68th (40:21), Samara Schlauderaff 138th (44:05), Sanny Gangi 144th (44:57), Hailey LaFrenier 149th (45:28) and Ada Jackson 151st (45:53).
