The Grand Rapids softball team picked up a 5-4 win over Hermantown Thursday.

The Thunderhawks pounded out 14 hits, led by a pair of three hit performances from Ellie Tillma and Lindsey Rajala. Emily Wochnick had two hits, Rajala drove in two runs with additional RBIs coming from Tillma, Wochnick and Kaija Kinnunen.

On Tuesday, the Thunderhawks fell to Greenway, 13-6.

The Thunderhawks put up 14 hits, however put themselves in a big hole after allowing 10 Raider runs in the first inning.

Jess Stauffer and Wochnick each had three hits for Grand Rapids. Tillma and Lindsey Racine each had two hits.

Wochnick drove in three runs, while Rajala had a pair of RBIs.

Claire Vekich had a grand slam for Greenway.

Grand Rapids hosted North Branch Friday and hosts Hibbing Tuesday.

The Raiders played at Fridley Saturday.

In other area softball scores, Hill City defeated Deer River, 19-4, Tuesday. The Warriors hosted Blackduck Friday, are at Chisholm Monday and host North Woods Tuesday.

Hill City was at Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Friday and heads to McGregor Monday.

GRG drops 4-3 match to Virginia

The Grand Rapids/Greenway boys tennis team fell to Virginia, 4-3, Tuesday.

The Thunderhawks had wins from Matt Frimanslund at No. 2 singles, Dylan Owens at No. 4 singles and the No. 3 doubles team of Grant Henrichsen and Hunter Bischoff.

Frimanslund rallied to take a three set win over the Blue Devils’ Gavin Flaim, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Owens won in straight sets over Matt Callister, 6-4, 6-2. Henrichsen and Bischoff also pulled of a straight set, taking set one, 6-2, then winning a close second set, 7-6.

GRG hosts Hermantown Tuesday.

Warrios pick up two wins

In area baseball, Deer River had wins this week over Littlefork Big Falls, 10-7, Tuesday and Nashwauk-Keewatin, 7-6, Thursday. They head to Chisholm Tuesday.

Grand Rapids was at Princeton Friday and competes at a tournament in Minnetonka Saturday. They are at Rocori Tuesday.

Greenway dropped games this week to Virginia, 1-0, Tuesday and Proctor, 9-1, Thursday. They hosted Ely Friday.

Hill City/Northland fell to Nashwauk-Keewatin, 12-1, Tuesday. They hosted Crosby-Ironton Friday.
