In 2016, Volkswagen settled its lawsuit with the federal government for violating the Clean Air Act. Minnesota’s share was $47 million over a 10-year time period. Across the country, states have used these funds to replace diesel fuel vehicles with electric. Let’s use our Minnesota funds to help school districts move towards cleaner energy transportation by replacing some of our diesel fuel buses with electric. Minnesota has 12,000 school buses. We have one electric bus. In Northern Minnesota some of our children spend hours each week riding buses to and from school and breathing in diesel fuel exhaust. We have an opportunity to make our voices heard. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency website (https:www.pca.state.mn.us/air/vw-phase-2) is currently taking public comments until Aug. 16 on use of the second phase of spending; $23.5 million is allocated over the next four years. Let them hear the facts from the perspective of out-state Minnesota residents and our concerns for our children’s health. Let’s keep some of these funds local and clean up the air our children are breathing. They will thank us for it.
