As we begin year 2019, let me remind readers that this page is a place to spur conversation. We invite you to share your thoughts, concerns, and ideas with your community. Don’t be afraid that your words may not be of the majority’s opinion. Don’t worry that you might start something that takes flight.
I know there is a perception among some that this newspaper receives and discards a lot of opinion letters. I have also been told there is the belief that we print anything and everything that comes our way. Neither is true.
We have regular writers who are passionate about their views, on the environment, politics and religion, who keep these issues on our minds every 30 days and within 500 words. Every-so-often, we also have those who offer gratitude for a supportive community. And, likewise, we hear from those who express disgust by senseless crimes.
This newspaper takes pride in providing a means for civil discussion. All voices and viewpoints are valued. We give precedence to local voices and those with statewide influence. All we ask is that people take ownership for their words with a name and signature.
There are times people shy away from submitting their thoughts to this page. For those who are afraid of displeasing people, may I remind you that if no one were to speak up there would be no conversations at all.
