Attention parents and caregivers: Summer is an important time for students to keep reading and build literacy skills. Students who do not read over the summer are in danger of the “summer slide” – a noticeable decline in reading ability. As Children’s Librarian Tracy Kampa noted a couple of weeks ago, numerous studies show that students who read infrequently or not at all over the summer see their reading abilities regress. The “summer slide” effect becomes more noticeable as students get older. However, if children read daily (whatever topic they choose) they build confidence and reading skills.

Check out the summer reading program at Grand Rapids Area Library as a way to jumpstart your family’s commitment to summer reading. Start by visiting the Children’s Library and picking up a book log! Tracy and Dion are ready to help young readers connected with reading level appropriate materials they will enjoy.
