William Anthony Yunk (Bill), age 82, of Grand Rapids, MN passed away surrounded by family at his home on, April 12, 2019.
Bill was born in 1936 in Deer River, MN to Felix and Ruth Yunk. He was united in marriage to Lennetta Malcolm (Nettie) on March 3, 1958 in Anaconda, Montana.
Bill worked as a copper smelter in Anaconda, Montana for 9 years. Bill was stationed in Okinawa, Japan then transferred to Vallejo, California where he worked at the Airforce Base at night and on the Navy Base during the day. Then the couple moved to Grand Rapids where Bill worked for the Blandin Paper Company for 32 years. While working at Blandin he also owned Bill’s Snowplowing and Booster starting service, Bill’s Garbage Disposal, and Prairie Lake Greenhouse and Nursery, and worked for Stoeke’s Septic Service. After retiring Bill worked for Alto Sodding, Gibbs Wild Rice processing, and as a consultant for Blandin Paper Company. He was also a volunteer driver with Rapids Transit and AEOA for 17 years serving the people of Itasca County.
Bill loved to go fishing, camping, and traveling with Nettie in the winter. He was always the official fish cleaner and fryer at church camp. He was a jokester, a social butterfly, and everybody’s friend. His nickname at the papermill was “Mr. Coffee”.
Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dorothy Stoeke; seven brothers, Robert, Leo, Martin, Fred, Albert, Edward, and Gene Yunk; and grandson, Barry Maloney.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Lennetta (Nettie); daughters, Annette (Rod) Zacharias and Teresa (John) Selander; sons, Anthony (Loretta) Yunk, and Victor (Gaylene O’Brien) Yunk; brother, James (Geraldine) Yunk; 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and many other family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2019 from 9:00 - 11:00 am at the First Church of God in Grand Rapids, MN. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11:00 AM at the church. Pastor Dale Steele will officiate. Burial will be at Itasca Calvary Cemetery in Grand Rapids, MN with military honors by Grand Rapids Area Veterans Honor Guard at a later date.
