Walden Leo Heino

Walden Leo Heino, age 87, passed away January 29, 2018 at Grand Village Nursing Home in Grand Rapids, MN.

Walden was born on April 13, 1930 to Arthur Heino and Myrtle (Walton) Heino in Eveleth, MN. He served in the United States Army from 1947 to 1949, stationed in the Philippines. He was a mathematician on the survey team and a demolitions expert. Walden attended Itasca Junior College from 1949 to 1951, earning an AA in Chemistry. He then attended the University of Minnesota from 1951 to 1957, earning a PhD in Chemistry. Walden married Harriet I. (Nelson) Alsen on June 21, 1953 in Coleraine, MN. They would later divorce. Walden worked as a Research Chemist for Du Pont and Company from 1957 to 1963, living in New York and Delaware during this time. Walden then taught Inorganic Chemistry at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa from 1964 to 1992.

After retiring from teaching, Walden moved to Grand Rapids, MN, where he would spend his remaining years, including many years in his house on the Mississippi River. His final residence was Grand Village Nursing Home.

Walden enjoyed fishing, reading, nature, radio, animals, chemistry, contributing to charities and spending time with his family and friends. He will be remembered for his quick wit, intelligence, quiet grace, sense of humor and strength (A 3-time cancer survivor).

Walden was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Susie Reid; nephew Gary Paul Reid; step son Bernard Alsen; son-in-law, Tom Gigliotti.

Walden is survived by his son, Mark (Lynn) Heino of Carroll, IA; daughter, Lynne Gigliotti of Grand Rapids, MN; five grandchildren; two great grandsons and numerous other relatives.

Walden’s family would like to thank the staff at Grand Village Nursing Home for the tremendous care they provided Walden with over the past few years, and for the support they provided for his family, especially in his final days.

A service to celebrate Walden’s life will be held Friday, February 2, at 12:00 P.M. at Rowe Funeral Home in Grand Rapids, MN, followed by a service with full Military Honors at Lakeview Cemetery in Coleraine, MN.
