He was born Aug. 29, 1965, in Grand Rapids where he grew up. He attended school at Wendigo Elementary, Grand Rapids Middle School and graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1983. He later attended Hibbing Vocational-Technical College and also Hibbing Community College receiving a degree in law enforcement. He served as a police officer in Annandale for 18 months and then worked as deputy sheriff in Wright County. He then served as police officer in West Hennepin County prior to his illness. He was a member of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association and the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by two daughters, Heather and Nicole Mutchler, both of Duluth; a son, Joshua Mutchler, Duluth; his parents, John "Jack" and Marian Mutchler, Grand Rapids; two sisters, Julie Mutchler, Grand Rapids, and Suzanne Hanson, Grand Rapids; and a brother, Thomas Mutchler, Bemidji.

Preceding him in death was a stillborn sister.

Funeral: Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Burial: Warba-Feeley Cemetery, Warba.
