Nick J. Johnson, age 77, of Grand Rapids, MN passed away Sunday, June 2, 2019 at Homestead Living and Rehab Center, Deer River MN.
Nick was born in 1942 in Cohasset, MN to John and Hattie (Statema) Johnson. He attended grade school in Cohasset and Grand Rapids and moved to Hibbing, MN where he attended high school.
Nick joined the U.S. Navy in 1959. After completing basic training in San Diego, he was stationed in Alameda and Treasure Island. Nick spent 2 years in Guam in the construction battalion and 1 year on board a heavy cruiser, the USS Helena. After serving in the Navy for 6 years, Nick was discharged and moved to the San Francisco Bay area. There he met his wife to be Lorraine, attended night school in San Leandro, where he earned his high school diploma and attended Chabot Jr. College. Nick and Lorraine May Pimentel were united in marriage on June 24, 1967 at St. Joachim’s Church in Hayward, CA.
Most of Nick’s working career was spent in sales, marketing, and management in the welding products, gases, and cryogenics industry. He worked in the San Francisco Bay area until he moved to his retirement home on Bass Lake in Grand Rapids, MN in July 1995.
Nick had a great sense of humor and was quite a jokester; many people remember his pranks. He loved boating, fishing, duck hunting, music, and living in the Northwoods surrounded by nature. Nick loved being with family and friends. He enjoyed talking to people and tinkering in his garage, which led to a small business later in life, where he fabricated and sold roll in boat docks. He was the ultimate salesman.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and brothers, Gene, Milton, Jim, and Curtis Johnson.
Nick is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lorraine; son, Erik (Lizabeth) Johnson; grandson, Cole; sister, Charlotte Simonson; aunt, Gladys Statema; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
