Michael John Carlson, age 76, of Grand Rapids, died November 27, 2019 at his home.
Mike was born September 15, 1943 in Minneapolis to Robert and Virginia (Secrist) Carlson. He graduated from Patrick Henry (Minneapolis) High School in 1961. As a kid, he loved spending time at his Uncle John’s resort on Long Lake. In 1962, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and proudly served until 1966. Mike would re-tell many stories of his USCG service and his time in Alaska, Florida and California. After military service, he attended St Cloud State University where he earned a Business Degree. On November 25th, 1967, he was united in marriage to Janice Borstad in Detroit Lakes. They lived in Minneapolis until 1977 when a job opportunity with Minnesota Power led them to Grand Rapids. After 20+ years, he retired from Minnesota Power. Retirement included caring for his ailing wife, traveling, and working as an independent contractor for M.A. Mortensen, Ace Industrial, and Moorhead Machinery. He loved northern Minnesota and spent much of his time golfing, hunting, and fishing.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Jan; and his sister Carole. He is survived by one daughter, Katie (Brant) Jewett of North Ogden, UT; one son, Chris Carlson of Cohasset; one brother, Robert (Mary) Carlson of Grand Rapids; his cousin, Terry Larson of Wesley Chapel, FL; sister-in-law, Sylvia Borstad of Fargo, ND; four grandchildren, Alex, Ava, Molly, and Michael; and three nephews, Jake (Katie) Carlson, Troy Bertsch, and Todd Borstad.
A memorial service will take place later this spring.
