Lucille “Lucy” Filipiak Fabeck, age 102, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at her home at Northwoods Villa, Grand Rapids, MN.
Lucy was born in January 28, 1917 to Michael and Antonia Cheslak in Kettle River, MN. She was saved during the 1918 forest fire in Moose Lake by fleeing to a plowed field with her parents and brothers. Lucy worked part-time at the Generd Andrews Forestry for twenty years in Willow River before becoming a fulltime homemaker. She lived in Split Rock Township most of her life, moving to Duluth in 1983. Lucy moved to Northwoods Villa in June 2014.
Lucy was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Duluth, MN, the Rosary Society, Harrison Birthday Club, the American VFW, and Legion. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo, polka dancing, knitting, and crocheting.
Preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Florian Filipiak and Clarence Fabeck; son, Richard Filipiak; four brothers; one sister; and one grandson, Leon Harwood.
Lucy is survived by her daughter, Antonia Harwood of Minneapolis, MN; son, William (Alice) Filipiak of Cohasset, MN; step-sons, Jerry (Dede) Fabeck of Duluth, MN; , Dan Fabeck of Minneapolis, MN; daughter-in-law, Debra Filipiak of Grand Rapids, MN; 16 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; six great great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Grand Rapids, MN followed by the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial. Fr. Seth Gogolin will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Kettle River, MN.
