George Charles Licke

Dr. George Charles Licke, 79, Deer River, MN, died Friday, October 11, 2019 in Deer River.

George was born April 23, 1940, in Hibbing, MN, grew up in Effie, MN and graduated Valedictorian from Deer River High School in 1958. He attended the University of Minnesota and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1962 with his Bachelor of Science. He then attended the University of Wisconsin (Madison) and graduated in 1967 with his PhD in organic chemistry. George worked for the Ethyl Corporation in Ferndale, MI until 1976. During his tenure there he developed a flame retardant for rayon which was patented. In 1976 George and his family returned to Deer River and purchased Bahr’s Motel. In 1987 he sold the motel and purchased the Bait Shop where he worked and resided until his passing.

Survived by children, Mark (Michelle) Licke, Suzanne (Barron) Johnson, Heidi (Mark) Ganzer, George Thomas (Roxann) Licke. Grandchildren Brandon and Jordon Licke. Siblings John (Marty) Licke, James Licke, and Linda (Rusty) Uscola.

Preceded by parents, George and Lois Licke.

Visitation: One hour prior at the funeral home. Service: Monday, October 21st, 2019, 1:00 PM. Carroll Funeral Home, Deer River, MN. Burial: Olivet Cemetery, Deer River, MN.
