Eugene (Gene) LeRoy Hendrickson, age 94, of Grand Rapids MN passed away Tuesday September 3, 2019 after a short stay at Grand Village.
Gene was born on July 22, 1925 in Max Township, MN to Hjalmar Albert Hendrickson and Alvina Julia (Sundberg) Hendrickson. He grew up in Max and attended grade school there with his younger sister Eileen.
Gene graduated from Grand Rapids Senior High School after his family moved to Grand Rapids, MN. In December of 1943 he found employment at Gildemeister Ford. In October of 1944 he was drafted into the Army and was enlisted from 1944-1946 were he had a position of driving for an Army General. After the Army, he worked again at Gildemeister Ford from 1946-1950. Gene went on to attended Duluth Business University in 1950 and 1951, and then took on a book keeping position at Gildemeister’s where he remained till 1972. Gene then became a self-employed carpenter and handyman until his retirement. Gene married Elizabeth G. (Betty) Brandt on July 16th, 1955. The couple lived and worked in Grand Rapids until Betty passed away in 2001.
Gene has been a long-time member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids and was blessed to meet another Elizabeth at church, who had lost her husband in 2002. Gene and Elizabeth (Jean) Root were married on August 28th, 2004 with several of the combined family members present. Gene loved family, visiting with friends, hunting and fishing, reading and fixing things.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; one infant son; first wife Elizabeth (Betty); sister Eileen Loretta Longmore; his Son-in-law, Duane Robert Card; Stepson, Greg Root; Aunts; Uncles; Cousins and many friends.
Gene is survived by his daughters, Deborah Jean (Marc) Mull; Dorinda Jean Card; wife, Elizabeth (Jean) Root Hendrickson; step-daughters, Lisa Ann (Paul) Ische; Holly Jean (Dan) Dobie; two grandchildren, Ashley (Paul) Stewart and Tyler (Maizie) Card; two great grandchildren, Auden Card and Rhett Stewart; step- grandchildren, Brianna Ische; Brandon (Khai) Ische; Taylor (Adam) Glorvigen; Tristan Dobie; Courtney Root and Amanda Root; Step Great Grandchildren, Westin Smith; Matthew Cullen; Pearl Ische; Bowen Ische; Peyton Glorvigen; Tenley Glorvigen; Jackson Glorvigen, along with several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday, September 13, 2019 at 10:00 A.M at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids, MN followed by the 11:00 A.M Memorial Service. Rev. William Zeige officiate. Burial will be at Itasca-Calvary Cemetery, Grand Rapids, MN.
