Douglas Joseph Coy, age 91, of Deer River, Minnesota, died August 10, 2019 in the Lodge at Grand Village.
He was born August 2, 1928 to Winnifred Charlotte (Quigley) and Robert Bruce Coy in Danvers, MN. He attended Benson High School, graduating in 1946, and attended St. John’s University. He graduated in 1953 from Marquette University Medical School in Milwaukee. During his medical training he met his wife Lois McAtee, who he wed in 1954. Upon being drafted in 1955, he and Lois eventually moved to California, where he was stationed at Fort Ord. Upon his discharge in 1958, he and Lois along with their three children returned to Milwaukee where he completed his medical residency. They then moved to Grand Rapids, MN in 1960, where he joined the Grand Rapids Clinic.
“Doc” was involved in many community organizations. He was instrumental in founding the Itasca Hospice, and served as its first medical director. Over his long career he served on the boards of Hope House, Kiesler House, and on the Arrowhead Regional Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Along with Lois he was a supporter of Camp Fire Girls of America and Camp Bluewater. During his four sons’ years playing high school football, he served as the team doctor, attending both home and away games where he was a familiar presence on the sidelines. He was an avid supporter of Ducks Unlimited, and Trout Unlimited.
Following his retirement in 1993, he continued on the various boards and added the Grand Rapids Library Foundation and enjoyed participating in the planning of the new library. It was then that he met his second wife, Janet (Walsh) Crawford. They were married in August of 2001 and made their home at Beaulieu Rinn on Island Lake.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grand Rapids since 1960 and served on various church councils over the years. In 2016 he became an Oblate of St. Benedict, out of St. Benedict’s Monastery in St. Joseph, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Robert Bruce Coy in 1975; and his wife, Lois in 1996.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Coy of Deer River; his six children, Mary, Robert, Arthur (Debra), Peter (Penny), Paul (Helen Kumhera), and Elizabeth (Mark Leonard) Coy; his stepson, Anthony (Pam) Crawford; stepdaughter, Deborah (Warren Hickey) Crawford; his grandchildren, Amber Verhel, Andy and David Coy, Delaney Pease, Katherine and Mackenzie Coy, and Isabelle Leonard; his great-grandchildren, Alexis and Joey Coy, Connor and Eddie Verhel; a beloved foster great-grandson; one sister, Barbara McGinnis; along with five nieces and nephews. .
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on August 16, 2019 at 11:00am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, with visitation for one hour prior to the service. A private burial will occur at a later date.
