Creativity was unleashed when local families recently participated in a gingerbread house building contest. It was a joint effort sponsored by the Itasca County Historical Society (ICHS) and the Grand Rapids Downtown Business Association. ICHS provided the gingerbread house kits and, with a grant from the Blandin Foundation, ICHS offered cash prizes to each winner in their category. More than 60 participants entered the contest. After picking up their kits, there were no rules aside from using anything to decorate the houses. Due to Covid, entries were sent in via emailed picture. There was such an overwhelming response to the contest that ICHS has planned to host the contest again at this time in 2021.
