Monday, May 27:

Disorderly Conduct:

At 3:37 a.m., deputies were approached by a suicidal male requesting to go to jail in Grand Rapids. Deputies attempted a mental health evaluation, but the male was uncooperative and was arrested for disorderly conduct.

Driving Complaint:

At 1:16 p.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 2 in Cohasset which resulted in the arrest of an individual with a warrant.

Property Damage:

At 8:27 p.m., deputies responded to a report of property damage on East U.S. Highway 169 in Grand Rapids. When deputies arrived, they found broken glass. Deputies made entry to the building and checked to make sure there was no one inside. The owners were contacted regarding the incident.

Tuesday, May 28:

Traffic:

At 8:18 p.m., officers heard and observed a vehicle accelerate at a high rate of speed at the intersection of South Pokegama Avenue and SE 13th Street in Grand Rapids. Due to the acceleration, the vehicle began to fishtail across its lane of traffic. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver stated he accelerated in the manor he did to prevent an accident. Officers explained to the driver that there was no other vehicle near his vehicle when he decided to accelerate and fishtail. The driver received a citation for exhibition driving.

Drug Complaint:

At 8:50 p.m., officers responded to a drug complaint on Itasca Street in Grand Rapids. According to the reporting party, they found a syringe and needle in their front yard. Officers arrived on the scene and collected and disposed of the syringe.

Burglary:

At 9:43 a.m., deputies responded to a cabin burglary which occurred on East Bear Lake Forest Road in Cook. The incident is under investigation.

Wednesday, May 29:

Property Damage:

At 8:02 a.m., officers responded to a report of property damage on SW 1st Street in Grand Rapids. According to the reporting party, her vehicle was egged while she was at work. Officers patrolled the area and located three other vehicles that were egged as well.

Accident:

At 8:58 a.m., officers responded to a report of a two motor vehicle accident which occurred at the intersection of NE 8th Avenue and NE 4th Street in Grand Rapids. Vehicle one was traveling north on NE 8th Avenue. It came to a stop at the red light at the intersection of NE 8th Avenue and NE 4th Street in the right hand turn lane. Vehicle two was traveling behind vehicle one. The driver of vehicle two stated his brakes quit working, causing him to strike the rear of vehicle one with the front end of his vehicle. There were no reported injuries and no vehicles were towed, although both vehicles sustained some damage. The driver of vehicle two was issued an administrative citation for unsafe equipment.

At 1:07 p.m., officers responded to a report of a single car accident which occurred in a parking lot on SE 29th Street in Grand Rapids. According to the reporting party, she backed out of her parking space and began to pull out of the parking lot, when she observed another vehicle backing out. The driver stated that this vehicle almost struck her car. The reporting party said she then swerved out of the way of the approaching vehicle and was too close to a concrete post in the parking lot, and side swiped it as she attempted to make a turn. There was no damage to the concrete post.

Suspicious Person:

At 2:01 p.m., officers responded to a report of a suspicious person on SE 7th Avenue in Grand Rapids. According to the reporting party, a suspicious male party was asking for drugs. Officers arrived on scene and made contact with the suspect, who denied asking for drugs. Officers instructed the suspect to move on, which the party did willingly.

Fire - Other:

At 2:46 p.m., officers and the Grand Rapids Fire Department responded to a report of a vehicle box smoldering on NW 1st Avenue in Grand Rapids. According to the vehicle owner, he had random debris within the back of his truck, including lithium batteries, which he said he assumed started the fire. There was no obvious damage to the vehicle as a result of the incident.

Thursday, May 30:

Suspicious Activity:

At 12:18 p.m., officers responded to a report of a female laying in the grass just off of the roadway on SE 7th Street in Grand Rapids. Officers arrived on scene and located the suspect, who was barefoot and laying on the boulevard with a cup and dog leash still in hand. The suspect awoke and immediately admitted to consumption of a large amount of alcoholic beverage. The female was unable to carry on a standard conversation. Officers helped the female to her feet to find that she was unable to stand. She was assisted back to the ground and Meds1 was contacted. Officers made arrangements for the dog to be returned to the rightful owner.

Traffic:

At 3:31 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a seat belt violation on NW 4th Street in Grand Rapids. The driver received a verbal warning for improper seat belt use.

At 3:56 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a seat belt violation on NW 4th Street in Grand Rapids. Officers observed the male driver wearing a light colored shirt but not wearing his seat belt. When officers conducted a traffic stop, the driver was wearing his seat belt. The driver admitted to not wearing his seat belt and stated he put it on after officers turned the emergency vehicle around. The driver received a citation for a seat belt violation.

Theft:

At 4:57 p.m., officers responded to a report of shoplifting on SE 29th Street in Grand Rapids. According to the reporting party, an individual took items in the self checkout lane without paying for them. Officers arrived on scene and spoke with the reporting party who stated that on five different days, the same individual did not scan some items at the self checkout. The reporting party showed officers video footage of this happening. A total of $25.26 in items was taken. Officers made contact with the suspect at her home, and she admitted that she did not pay for the items and stated she did not know why she did not pay for them as she had the money. The suspect was issued a citation for shoplifting.

Accident:

At 5:29 p.m., officers responded to a vehicle accident which occurred at the intersection of South Pokegama Avenue and NW 3rd Street in Grand Rapids. The driver of vehicle one indicated that he was traveling on Pokegama Avenue North and was stopped at the 3rd Avenue intersection. The driver said he was within the inside lane. He also indicated that the light was red and that he was struck by approaching vehicle two. The driver of vehicle two said that, while approaching 3rd Street North, she attempted to retrieve her sunglasses. Upon refocusing on her travels, the collision was occurring. No injuries were reported.

Friday, May 31:

Intoxicated Person:

At 2:11 p.m., officers received a call from an individual on SE 2nd Avenue in Grand Rapids requesting to be transported to the hospital for alcohol withdrawal. Officers responded to the call and transported the individual to the emergency room without incident.

Theft:

At 5 p.m., officers responded to a report of shoplifting on South Pokegama Avenue in Grand Rapids. Officers arrived on scene and identified the suspect, who stated she had attempted to walk out of the store after switching the tags on an item which reduced the value of what she paid for it by $39.99. Loss prevention said they had watched the individual remove the tag from a purse for the original value in the store and followed her through the check out and stopped her at the door. The reporting party said the day prior, the suspect had been in the store and did something similar to other items. However, at that time, the female got scared off and left the items in the store prior to her departure. The suspect was cited for shoplifting and was served a trespass notice by the store manager for a period of one year.

Accident:

At 5:40 p.m., officers responded to a report of a two vehicle crash which occurred at the intersection of Pokegama Avenue North and NE 2nd Street in Grand Rapids. The driver of vehicle one was traveling on North Pokegama Avenue in the inside lane, approaching the 2nd Street intersection. The driver stated he stopped prior to the intersection at a green light due to traffic backup. The driver was pulling a boat on a trailer. Vehicle two was traveling behind vehicle one and advised he was unable to stop and possibly accidentally hit the gas, causing him to strike the boat motor on the boat being towed by vehicle one. The boat motor's lower unit was broken. No damage occurred to vehicle two. No injuries were reported.

Saturday, June 1:

Intoxicated Person:

At 6:46 p.m., officers responded to a report of an intoxicated person on Diane Lane in Grand Rapids. According to the reporting party, a male was drinking and driving a four wheeler around the area, almost hitting cars. Officers arrived on scene and were unable to locate the four wheeler or the suspect.

Fire:

At 7:27 p.m., officers responded to a report of a kitchen fire on South Pokegama Avenue in Grand Rapids. Officers arrived on scene and assisted in removing the occupants from the residence and extinguishing the remaining fire. Traffic control was also provided for responding Grand Rapids Fire Department units. The fire appeared to have resulted from the homeowner attempting to deep fry french fries. A male homeowner was transported to the emergency room by Meds1 for a possible minor burn on his hand.

Drug Complaints:

At 7:50 p.m., officers responded to a report of a found syringe on NW 7th Avenue in Grand Rapids. Officers collected the item, which appeared to have been there for some time, and disposed of it.

Sunday, June 2:

Accident:

At 1:20 a.m., officers responded to a report of a bicyclist who fell on the sidewalk at the intersection of South Pokegama Avenue and South 17th Street in Grand Rapids. Officers arrived on scene and observed the male lying in the right turn lane of northbound South Pokegama Avenue. A bike was lying next to him, and he appeared to have a large abrasion to the right side of his face as well as on his knuckles. The individual appeared to be highly intoxicated. Meds 1 arrived on scene and the individual was transported to Grand Itasca. Upon inspection of the scene, it appeared the individual had rode his bike over a retaining wall onto the sidewalk, causing him to launch over the bike’s handlebars. The individual’s bike was brought into a nearby business for safekeeping until the male could pick it up.

Traffic:

At 2:06 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on NW 4th Street in Grand Rapids which resulted in the driver of the vehicle receiving a citation for driving after suspension and underage drinking and driving.

Theft:

At 6:36 p.m., officers responded to a report of shoplifting on South Pokegama Avenue in Grand Rapids. According to the reporting party, the suspect was in the self check out and was paying for some of her items and put other items In the bag that she did not scan. The value of the items the suspect did not pay for was $22. The individual was trespassed from the store for one year and was issued a citation for shoplifting.

Drug Complaints:

At 11:56 p.m., officers responded to a report of a drug complaint on Canal Street in Grand Rapids. According to the reporting party, someone came up, knocked on his door and stated he was high on mushrooms and was looking for meth. The reporting party said the male then left. Officers patrolled the area and observed a male matching the description. Officers spoke to the male and asked him to come over to the squad car and talk. The male kept walking away until he saw a second squad car pulling up. The male denied knocking on doors and asking for meth. He also denied using mushrooms. The male came back on conditions of release and was subject to random testing. Officers transported the male to the Itasca County Jail for a urine test. Officers made contact with the oncall attorney, and he advised that, if the male did not show signs of impairment, then a test could not be taken. There were no obvious signs of impairment so the male was brought back to Canal Street upon his request.
