Sean Martinson, Murphy Elementary Principal, has been selected to serve as Interim Superintendent for Independent School District (ISD) 318 following an announcement made during a special meeting of the school board on Thursday, June 27.

A board committee met and interviewed four internal candidates for the position earlier this week, according to school board member Malissa Bahr, who served on the committee alongside fellow board members David Marty, Tom Peltier and Sue Zeige.

Martinson’s position will be short-term, explained Bahr, extending approximately 10 weeks, during which time the board will continue its search for an interim superintendent for the 2019-2020 school year. During that time, the district will continue its search for a long-term superintendent to permanently fill the position.

“All the candidates we interviewed were stellar candidates,” said Bahr of the internal search. “We have a lot of depth and experience in our district and that was impressive to see.”

Marty expressed similar notes of pride in the four candidates interviewed by the district this week, saying he thought that “all the candidates were exceptional.”

“I was truly impressed with the depth, the understanding, the education, the appreciation for how to support our students, from all the candidates,” Marty said. “I was proud to have these people on our staff in ISD 318.”

According to Zeige, Martinson has experience within the district, and is “on top of the elementary facilities,” which she said was “the most critical thing right now that we’re dealing with.”

According to a district press release following the announcement, the school board will begin the process of searching for an interim superintendent for the 2019-2020 school year immediately. The process for selecting a permanent superintendent will begin later this winter. The community will be kept informed throughout the process. The public can contact the Superintendent’s Office at 218-327-5704 with any questions or concerns.

Also during Thursday’s special meeting, the board:

Approved the minutes of the June 17 special board meeting.

Approved the superintendent search consulting firm, School Exec Connect, for the interim and permanent superintendent search.
