AmeriCorps members pledge to “get things done” during a special ceremony this week at the Blandin Foundation in Grand Rapids.

Local AmeriCorps members take pledge for 2019-20

This week, approximately 20 Minnesota Reading Corps and Minnesota Math Corps tutors, along with Grand Rapids school representatives, gathered at the Blandin Foundation to take part in the AmeriCorps Pledge Ceremony.

The pledge ceremony officially kicked off the 2019-2020 Grand Rapids school year for the tutors. The AmeriCorps members will now begin the Reading Corps and Math Corps Institute, a three-day training program.

“Reading Corps and Math Corps are statewide initiatives that help approximately 35,000 students across Minnesota become successful in reading by the end of third grade and proficient in math by the end of eighth grade,” according to an AmeriCorps press release.

The members will serve in preschools, elementary schools and middle schools in the Grand Rapids area. A total of 450 students will be served throughout their year of service.

“You’ll have the opportunity to positively impact the lives of people in our community directly and indirectly by putting the needs of our local communities first,” said Senator Justin Eichorn during the ceremony. “You’re helping build a base of well-rounded individuals who can contribute to making Minnesota a better place to live.”

Senator Eichorn, along with other members who have served for three to four years, led the group in the pledge. The pledge ended with the phrase, “I will get things done.”
