Susan Hayes and Marn Flicker, representing Itasca County, were runners-up for Outstanding Senior Volunteers at the Minnesota State Fair. Hayes and Flicker were named Itasca County Outstanding Senior Volunteers Aug. 16, at the Itasca County Fair.
Hayes focuses most of her volunteer work on improving both the mind and body. Her list of volunteer activities include the Grand Rapids Area Library, Friends of the Library, Reif Performing Arts Center, ElderCircle Bone Builders, ElderCircle Tai Ji Quan, Itasca County Historical Society, ElderCircle Matter of Balance, YMCA Active Living Center, Ruby’s Food Pantry, ElderCircle Receptionist, King Elementary School, ElderCircle Mailbox Buddies, American Association of University Women (AAUW), PEO, North Star Women’s Club and more.
Flicker has dedicated his life toward helping others, from having served in his church as a child to volunteering for two U.S. Air Force tours in Vietnam to 22 years with Monticello Fire and Rescue in Monticello, Minn. Flicker’s list of volunteer activities include Jessie Lake Watershed Association, ElderCircle HandyHands, St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, AARP Smart Driver Program instructor and National and District Coordinator, Minnesota Walleye Advisory Board, City of Grand Rapids Planning and Zoning Commission, Let’s Go Fishing with Seniors and more.
Itasca County has had a quite a showing at the Minnesota State Fair in previous years, with state awards presented to Judy Peterson from Grand Rapids in 2018, Gwenn Smith from Deer River in 2017, Lloyd Adams from Wabana in 2013 and Joan Oja from Pengilly in 2011; and First Runner-Up awards going to Jerry Kleven from Grand Rapids in 2018, Chuck Hilgedick from Bigfork in 2017, Jim Sommers from Cohasset in 2015 and Lorraine Linser from Grand Rapids in 2008.
