The death of a Deer River woman is being investigated as a homicide.
According to Itasca County Sheriff Vic Williams, Sonya Ann Smith, 43, was found dead “as a result of multiple traumatic injuries due to assault” at her Deer River home Wednesday morning.
Deputies, along with Deer River police and investigators from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension responded to the home in the 500 block of Fifth Street Southeast in Deer River just before 9 a.m. Wednesday morning after receiving a 911 call.
Sheriff’s office and BCA investigators have conducted numerous interviews and collected forensic evidence from the scene which has led them to believe this was not a random attack, Williams said.
“There is not an ongoing threat to public safety,” Williams said.
An autopsy on Smith’s body was performed at the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office Thursday morning, but any results from the autopsy have not been released.
Williams, citing the ongoing investigation into Smith’s death, said that no other details are being released at this time, including any information on a possible suspect or whether or not a weapon was involved.
“This is a tragic situation,” Williams said Friday afternoon. “We have to be careful to do everything by the rules to protect everyone involved.
The sheriff’s office is handling the investigation with assistance from the Deer River Police Department, the BCA and the Ramsey County Medical Examiner.
