The Grand Rapids Downtown Business Association’s (DBA) Activities Committee, in collaboration with member partners and local artists, introduced three painted pianos to the Downtown on Friday, Aug. 3. The three pianos, which are sponsored by Brewed Awakenings (located on the east side of the coffee shop on 1st Avenue NE), UnWined Up North (located on the wine shop’s patio, also on 1st Avenue NE), and the Reif Performing Arts Center (located in front of the Lake & Co Shop on 1st Avenue NW), are part of the DBA Activities Committee mission to create interactive experiences for locals and visitors alike in the downtown area.
The Grand Rapids Downtown Business Association has created committees like the Activities Committee to focus on specific tasks and projects that helps market and promote the downtown as the place people want to be.
“These pianos give not only an artistic canvas, but a chance for those in our community to interact with that canvas, and encourages them to further explore our amazing downtown,” said Jessie Siiter, committee member. “Anytime we can bring the business and arts community together, that is a win.”
The artists responsible for these works were: Michaela Smith (piano at Brewed Awakenings), Buzz McCulloch (piano at Lake & Co) and Allison Daigle and Jessica Bowers (piano at Unwined Up North).
The DBA Activities Committee is made up of Chair - Mike Erickson (Brewed Awakenings), Jessie Siiter (Visit Grand Rapids), Sandy Anderson (Move it Real Estate), Katie Marshall (MacRostie Art Center), and Shantel Dow (The Reif Center). The committee hopes that these are just the first of the pianos to be distributed throughout the town. Businesses interested in sponsoring a piano for their business should contact the committee by emailing Jessie Siiter at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
