Around the world many people will be joining a Global Climate Strike on Friday, Sept. 20. The Grand Rapid Area Earth Circle will sponsor a local event at Central School (south lawn) from 2 – 5 p.m. and everyone is invited to participate. This movement is a continuation of the Student Climate Strikes that have been happening throughout the world on Fridays and was initiated by Greta Thunberg, a young Swedish girl who has begun a movement of young people concerned about the future of the Earth. Thunberg has been on the news recently as she traveled from Europe to New York (on a solar/wind powered sailboat) to participate in the United Nations Climate Action Summit on Sept. 23. She has also spoken to the participants at the recent Paris Climate Talks and the Devos Economic Forum about her concerns about the climate crisis.
The Earth Circle will have information tables, music, climate conversations, snacks and much more at the local Climate Strike on Sept. 20. Participants are invited to bring bells, whistles, drums, or any kind of noise makers to use at the event. The purpose is to raise awareness of the growing threat of climate change, to bring people together and encourage them to consider what steps they can take to protect the future of the Earth.
The Earth Circle meets on the third Saturday of each month at 2 p.m. at the Grand Rapids Area Library. Their mission is to “raise awareness and inspire action for positive change”. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
