Is your bookshelf out of control? Are the books double-layered because there is no more room? Are you a book club member who doesn’t know what to do with the books you’ve read? Have your children outgrown their picture books? Are you longing to display some family treasures or photos but all the shelves are filled with books? You have CDs but no player? Did you have a garage sale and discovered none of the shoppers wanted your collection of murder mysteries? Help is at hand! The Friends of Grand Rapids Area Library can solve your problem with their annual book sale during the first weekend of August in Central Square Mall.
The Friends operate the used book store in the library and collect books year-round but the sale committee is beginning to sort and pack books for the sale on August 3-5. Now is the time to drop off your gently-used books, CDs, DVDs, puzzles, and games for all ages. Materials can be dropped off at the library during regular library hours Monday through Saturday until July 30. Books should be clean, not musty or mildewed. Encyclopedias, old textbooks, Readers Digest condensed books, and items that are torn cannot be accepted. Before donating an item ask yourself if you would buy it?
The annual book sale, jointly sponsored by Friends of Grand Rapids Area Library and the Grand Rapids Area Library Foundation, coincides with Tall Timber Days. All proceeds from the sale support the library in purchasing new materials and underwriting special programs and projects.
Volunteers are needed during set-up and to work the sale. If you love books, this is the chance to spend a few hours with thousands of them. Sale hours are Friday, Aug. 2 from 8:30 a.m. until 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3 from 9:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 4 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday offers a bag sale where shoppers can fill a large grocery bag for just $5. Volunteers can help with set-up prior to the sale, assist shoppers and straighten tables during the sale, and pack up remainders after the sale.
