Tim Scherkenbach to speak on Climate Crisis
The Grand Rapids Area Earth Circle will celebrate their sixth anniversary this month. The local environmental group recently formed a Climate Crisis Team to devote an increasing amount of energy and action to raising awareness of climate change and how it will affect this area. The group will also begin work on practical ways the public can act to limit the damage as much as possible. This will be the major focus at the next meeting of Earth Circle, which will be Saturday, June 15 at 2 p.m. at the Grand Rapids Area Library meeting room.
Tim Scherkenbach will be a guest speaker at the meeting and present up-to-date information on climate change and potential steps we can take on a local level. Scherkenbach graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering. He then worked for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for 40 years as manager of all of the major environmental programs. He is now retired and has decided to devote his time to the climate change crisis.
The next regular meeting of the Climate Crisis Team will be on Thursday, June 20, at 2 p.m. at the Blandin meeting room at Central Square Mall. There will be further discussion of local action on climate change. The meeting will be followed by a Climate Rally near the downtown Pokegama Avenue Bridge. Some signs will be available or bring your own. For further information call 218-259-4254.
