Northern Lights Students Create a Halloween Fright

Northern Lights Community School (a project-based charter school in Warba) students are hard at work on a Halloween project that allows them to be very creative. Every year they build a large haunted house at their school and run it for three weekends in October. This is project based learning at its best. Students write the script that leads guests through the venue, learning the five elements of Literature along with creative writing, and scene development. They create and build the props and the maze, create the characters, learn to complete the special effects makeup, and perform in the haunted house. This project helps students fulfill required state standards and credit in Language Arts, drama, technology, service learning, and math. There will be about 45 students taking part in some form to make this year’s haunted house a success.

Each year there is a new theme that the script and scenery are based on. This year’s theme is a carnival and freak show where you never know what you will encounter around the corner. You will meet many characters throughout the tour including the Ringmaster, the mother of the freaks, Zippy the Clown and patients who are freak experiments trapped inside. During the tour you will be led to the outdoor maze, and hopefully you will find your way out. This will be the sixth year students have created this fright night venue, and each year it has grown in both size and reputation. NLCS now has visitors who travel from Minneapolis, Duluth, and Wisconsin to take the tour.

Opening weekend will kick off the project in Warba starting October 11th and 12th. It will also be open on the 18th, 19th, 265h, , and 276h. It runs from 7:00 PM through 11:00 PM with the last tour starting at 10:45 at the school. We do warn that NO ONE under the age of 13 will be allowed in without an adult. There are loud noises, flashing lights, stairs to climb, and obnoxious odors. Please dress for the weather as a large portion is outside. The cost per person is $10. All proceeds will go to help fund a student trip to Paris and London to study Literature and History.
