Mississippi Diamond Jewelers is celebrating 10 years of being in business and they want you to stop by and join in the celebration.
Ni’Cole Shannon Barker, owner and operator of Mississippi Diamond Jewelers, said her store is a unique, fresh boutique that is welcoming to everyone. That atmosphere was a goal she set for herself when she started out 10 years ago.
With more than 20 years of experience and an enormous passion for jewelry paired with, according to her website, a mission to provide a superior product, exceptional value and excellent service, Barker filled her store with a few designer lines and has been in business ever since.
Barker said she wanted a business of her own with a boutique feel so customers could casually shop and browse handmade items in a no-pressure environment. “It is my goal to educate and assist my customers with their jewelry purchases by offering my store as a resource to help my customers complete their desires and fulfill their jewelry needs, whether big or small,” she said
Her business has been in the same location since it opened its doors in October 2005. Located in historic downtown Grand Rapids, much of the original structure, along with the tin tile and corner pieces adorning the high ceiling, remain visible and compliment the crisp lines and dazzling display cases below.
“When we first started, we barely had enough pieces to fill the displays,” Barker said. “Now we have more than enough to display and are able to select what we sell from a number of different designers and lines.”
Recently, Pandora Jewelry upgraded Barker’s dealer status, allowing her to offer a wider variety of pieces in her store.
However, upgraded statuses and the ability to select what she sells didn’t come easily. Like many other small businesses, Mississippi Diamond has seen its hard times.
“I’m humbled and feel so blessed to have survived the recession and gotten through rough years in 2008 and 2009,” Barker said.
She credits the strength of her business to striving to improve all the time, offering expert knowledge and quality pieces.
Barker explained how she and her employees take pride in the pieces they sell by personally going through and selecting which pieces will be featured in the store.
Each of her employees have a different taste and style and between them they cover a wide variety of styles and offer some really unique items, Barker explained.
Among those items are pieces from the Sylvie Jewelry Collection and the eye-catching display of Valina Bridal, featuring a wide selection of engagement rings and wedding bands that Barker said pair beautifully with GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certified diamonds.”
The store carries both men’s and women’s watches, rings and offers a number of different women’s necklaces, earrings, bracelets and accessories. There is even a line of Doggie Diva Collars for those who love to pamper their pets.
Mississippi Diamond also offers a number of American-made lines from regional jewelers like the new line from Minneapolis-based Killian. Killian’s bracelets and rings allow women to customize their looks, on the go, with interchangeable charms and jewels which may be purchased separately.
A line of men’s wedding bands featured at the shop has an interesting connection to the area since its rings are made with materials mined on the Iron Range.
As Mississippi Diamond Jewelers prepares for its 10 year anniversary, to show its appreciation, there are a number of in-store events for its customers. A Pandora Promotional Charm Event ended Sept. 19. In October, the Pandora Free Ring Event begins.
Wrapping up the celebration is the customer appreciation event at the end of October.
“Since we have the best customers, we want to offer a prize that is equal to that,” Barker said.
The prize? A romantic three night stay at Gun Flint Lodge, which was recently named “The Best Wilderness Resort in the State” by the Star Tribune.
The package can be used anytime from Nov. 1 to Dec. 24 and includes a daily DIY breakfast; the cabin’s fridge will be stocked daily, and if weather permits, complimentary skis and snow shoes. Sweetie, the Mississippi Diamond shop dog even waived the pet fees associated with this prize so the winner may bring a pet.
