Schrock wins title at ITU Long Distance Worlds

MOTALA, Sweden — Elite triathlete Mary Beth Ellis of Colorado and age-group athletes Sheri Schrock of Cohasset and John Weber of New York raced their way to the top of the podium at the ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships, held Saturday, June 27.

Schrock competes at Junior Worlds in Kazakhstan

Somer Schrock, 18, of the Itasca Ski Club placed 40th in the Nordic combined 10-kilometer race and 44th in the 5-kilometer race at the Junior World Ski Championships at the Sunkar International Ski Jumping Complex in Almaty, Kazakhstan last week.

Schrock to compete for U.S. at Nordic Junior Worlds

Park City, Utah – Somer Schrock, 18, of the Itasca Ski Club has been named to the USA Junior World team. Schrock will compete at the 2015 FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships to be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, Feb. 1-8 at the Sunkar International Ski Jumping Complex. Schrock’s teammates will be Ben Loomis from Eau Claire, Wis., and Ben Berend, Jasper Goode, and Koby Vargus from Steamboat Springs, Colo.

Mt. Itasca to host Junior National Qualifier

COLERAINE – The Itasca Ski and Outing Club, based at the Mt. Itasca Winter Sports Center in Coleraine, is hosting the Junior National Qualifier - Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined - Tournament on the big 70-meter hill Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 20-21. The meet will field top jumpers from across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan, including 2014 Junior National Champions across several age classes. Competitors are vying to represent the Central Division at the 2015 Junior Nationals in Steamboat Springs, Colo., March 3-7.

Itasca Curling Club to host Women’s National Curling Competition

Itasca Curling Club in Grand Rapids has been selected to host the prestigious United States Women’s Curling Association’s “32nd Annual Senior Women’s National Bonspiel” beginning Wednesday, Nov. 20 with the Championship games held on Sunday, Nov. 24.

Auto racing: LaBarge gets first win

For Hibbing super stock division driver Andy LaBarge, Thursday night had never looked better. LaBarge has been on the incline as the season progressed and finally capped it grabbing the checkers over a field of tough competitors at the Tom Clusiau Grand Rapids Speedway last week.

GRAND RAPIDS – Rowing machines are boring. They sit in one place, unmoving. There is nothing to look at. And for a guy like Nick Taylor, a guy who likes to go fast, that was not going to help with his training.

Local snowboarder wins first place at international competition

Persistence has paid off in a big way for Itasca County snowboarder Eddie Fauth. For the past 10 winters, since he was six years old, Fauth has taken every opportunity to spend time at his home training hill, Mt. Itasca, or anywhere else with snow and a rail to grind. The result is a first place finish in the 15-year-old and under division at the International championships of the 2013 Volcom Stone’s Peanut Butter & Rail Jam, held at Mammoth Resort, Calif., on April 20. 2013.

Christiansen qualifies for pro Grand Prix event

Anna Christiansen decided to set a goal for this year. A personal goal which, the Grand Rapids native said, is something she rarely does. The funny thing about her personal goal though: She needed the support of her entire team to reach it.

'Second to Last' bonspiel at Itasca Curling Club

The Itasca Curling Club hosted its annual ‘Second to the Last’ bonspiel last weekend, bringing in 32 teams for a days-long competition and social event. A total of 19 teams were from out of town, including two from Canada and a handful from the Twin Cities metro area. Friday and Saturday’s play led into Sunday’s finals, with the championship events concluding as follows:

Curling: Team Solem’s trip a learning experience

Sitting at 3-4 through the first seven draws of round robin play, the U.S. junior women’s curling team found themselves matched up with the Czech Republic – also 3-4. A win, and the U.S. (represented by Team Solem) would still have a good chance to make the four-team playoff of the World Junior Championships via a tiebreaker. A loss, and they were essentially out.

Watson makes jump to NHL

Philip E. Watson, a native of Cohasset and a member of the Grand Rapids High School Class of 2004, recently made the jump to the big leagues. After years working for colleges and a stint with the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer, Watson took a job as Assistant Athletic Trainer with the NHL’s New York Islanders, fulfilling a lifelong goal. Less than three months into his new gig, we chatted with Watson about his experience so far.

Bromenschenkel curling rink

The Sandy Bromenschenkel rink of Grand Rapids qualified for one of the three Minnesota spots in the 65th United States Women’s Curling Association (USWCA) National Bonspiel held Feb. 11 -17, in Portage, Wis. The event was hosted by the Portage Curling Club with Michele Kornaus as On-Site Chairperson. Other Minnesota teams that qualified included the Sally Augustin rink from Arden Hills and the Amy Anderson rink from the St. Paul Curling Club.

Local quartet heads to Junior National Curling Championship

GRAND RAPIDS – Team Solem has been here before. Well, kind of. They’ve been to the Junior National Curling Championships in previous years, and have come away with two silvers and a bronze. Where they haven’t been is to the Broomstones Curling Club in Wayland, Mass. But that’s where the quartet of Miranda and Chelsea Solem, Karlie Koenig, and Vicky Persinger will be starting Jan. 26 to compete for this year’s Junior National Curling title.
