It was a chance to look ahead at the future Wednesday afternoon as four Grand Rapids athletes committed to take the next step in their athletic careers at the spring National Signing Day at the Grand Rapids High School lobby.

Rapids boys champs at Early Bird Invite

Area track and field teams competed at the Chisholm Early Bird meet Friday. The Grand Rapids boys led the 12-team field in the boys meet and the Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin girls team came away with a runner-up finish behind Hibbing.

There was a significant transition this season on the ice for Grand Rapids junior Mitchell Mattson. As a sophomore skating alongside one of the school’s all-time leading scorers Avery Peterson, Mattson found ways to score with opponents focusing their attention to Peterson.
