David John Karkela, 57, of Jacobson, Minn., died unexpectedly on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at his home.
David was born in Grand Rapids, to Wesley and Emilie Karkela. After graduating from Grand Rapids High School, he went to Itasca Community College, then graduated from St. Cloud State University with a degree in business. Throughout his life, he was a hard worker and owner of Auto Spa Carwash, West End Auto, and Minit Mart gas station. He enjoyed spending time with his family, boat trips down the Mississippi River, motorcycling, snowmobiling, and relaxing on the water.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece, Senja Karkela.
Survivors include three daughters, Renee (Adam) Niemala of Grand Rapids, Jean (Ben) Bahr of Columbus Township, Minn., and Anne (Matt) Lillyblad of Blaine, Minn.; grandsons, Andrew Niemala and Tyler Bahr; three brothers, Larry (Joyce) Karkela, Thomas (Peggy) Karkela, Ronald (Linda) Karkela; and a sister, Karen (Cush) Minar; former wife, Mona Karkela; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles; significant other, Julie Grigsby; and many friends.
Visitation is from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. service on Thursday, Nov. 3 in the Libbey Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.
