Ralph L. Sutherland, age 85, of Grand Rapids, Minn., passed away Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012 at Grand Itasca Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Ralph L. Sutherland was born Jan. 21, 1927 to George and Helen (Erickson) Sutherland. He attended Blackberry School and Grand Rapids High School. In 1945 he was drafted into the US Army and served in Japan. On April 27, 1948 he was united in marriage to Edith Connolly, and they purchased land in Blackberry, built a house and they raised their family. He was employed with DM&IR Railroad for many years and then worked for Lumberman’s Supply until his retirement.

Ralph was elected to the Dairyland Electric Board of Directors where he served for over 40 years as treasurer and chairman for many of those years. He also represented northern Minnesota as a member of the United Power Association Board of Directors. Ralph was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Warba Legion Post 432 and the Voiture 806 40-8.

Ralph is preceded in death by his wife, Edith; son, David; parents George and Helen; sisters Lorraine Kolp, and June Lee; brothers Earl, Halvor, Douglas, Roy and Norman.

He is survived by daughters Peg (Richard) Dillon, Virginia (Daniel) Crowe, Carol (RD) Scott, Julia (Len) Daigle, Eileen Sutherland and Laurie (Mark) Bonham all of Grand Rapids; sons, Ken of New Ulm and Paul (Marge) of Grand Rapids; 22 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren; sister Shirley Johnson of Warba; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Monday, Oct. 1, 2012 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Grand Rapids, Minn. and will continue at the church on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012 from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Funeral Service at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, Minn. Rev. Fr. Jerry Weiss will officiate. Burial with full military honors will be in Hazelwood Cemetery, Blackberry, Minn.
