Maynard Norman Hedquist passed away April 10, 2013, while living at Becky’s Place in rural Deer River.

He was born May 6, 1920, at the family homestead on Deer Lake to Emanuel and Eugenia Hedquist. Maynard attended both the Fawn Lake and South Grade schools, Deer River High School and was confirmed at Clara Lutheran Church. He began his service with the United States Army in February of 1942 and was trained at Camp Barkly, Texas, to be a medic. He was assigned to duty in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Maynard was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Tech Sergeant and returned home to the family farm and resort.

Maynard farmed, maintained Linden Grove Resort and worked with Elmer Danielson maintaining summer cabins in the Deer and Moose Lake area, particularly on Oklahoma Hill. He also worked on occasion for Drotts Brothers and Hedquist doing construction.

Some of Maynard favorite times and memories included deer hunting camp in Big Falls, fishing on Deer Lake and spending time visiting with the guests who came every year to Linden Grove Resort.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mildred Taylor and brother Clarence

He is survived by his sister-in-law Marilyn Hedquist, nieces and nephews, Pam and Igor Frolow, Susan and Mark Wohlrabe, Sandra and Ed May, Nancy and David Anderson, Neil and Annette Hedquist, and Judy and Bob Sanford. Great-nieces and nephews Ryan and Allegra Frolow, Katherine Frolow, Josh and Lou Wohlrabe, Jake and Charity Wohlrabe, Jenny and Zach Burkhart, Jeffrey and Rani May, Ronnie Anderson, Penny Berger, Dina Anderson, Jena Anderson, Vanessa and James Sedlmayr, LeAnn Hedquist, Emily Hedquist, Joe Hedquist, and Heather and Heidi Borgshatz.

Visitation will be Friday, April 19 at Carroll Funeral home, Deer River from 6 - 8 p.m. His funeral will be on Saturday April 20, at 1 p.m. at Clara Lutheran Church in Deer River with Pastor Peg Christianson officiating. Military rites will be provided by the VFW Post 2720 American Legion post 122, Burial will be in Itasca-Calvary Cemetery in Grand Rapids.
