Get Fit Itasca/SHIP: Increasing active transportation in Grand Rapids
Updated: November 10, 2011 - 2:39 pm

Grand Rapids residents have increased the amount of trips they take using active transportation including biking and walking according to a study conducted by Get Fit Itasca and the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP). The coalition collected data through a trail/side walk count the second week of June and by a survey at the 2010 Itasca County Fair booth. The counts and surveys were repeated in 2011 following the installation of five informational kiosks, production of hand held maps, a marketing campaign, and an event to promote physical activity in the area and provide youth with bike education. Although the trail counts resulted in lower numbers, there was a 63 percent increase of residents that reported using the trail one or more times throughout the previous year.
