Sweet Goodness! It's Time for Maple Syrup Family Day at the Forest History Center
Updated: March 13, 2015 - 9:36 am

The Forest History Center is once again gearing up for Maple Syrup Family Day, which is on Saturday, March 21st, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are excited to teach people about about maple syrup—a wonderfully sweet treat with a very long history in North America. Join them to see how sugar maple trees are tapped to collect sap. Ever tasted the sweet goodness of maple jack or hard maple candies? They'll have them available to sample. Or take a turn at cranking an old-time ice cream maker to churn out ice cream that you can top with maple syrup--it rivals Ben & Jerry. How about hot candied popcorn made with maple syrup or maple syrup sundaes?  Oh yeah, they will have both available! If you'd like to see a commercial maple syrup production center in action, the Forest History Center will also provide a shuttle service to TimberSweet in Cohasset, which is just a few minutes away. This will be a wonderful program for the launch of spring. And, as a bonus, the Forest History Center will be having a special sale on maple syrup products in their gift shop.

Forest History Center Launches Aldo Leopold Day
Updated: March 13, 2015 - 9:36 am

Considered by many as the father of wildlife management and of the United States’ wilderness system, Aldo Leopold was a conservationist, forester, philosopher, educator, writer, and outdoor enthusiast. The Forest History Center is hosting Aldo Leopold Day on Saturday, March 28th to celebrate his life and teach people more about the legacy he created. There will be selected readings of Leopold’s Sand County Almanac and other literary works with Harry Hutchins, screenings of the video Green Fire, Dutch oven cooking with Sue Hutchins and Kim Young, a nature trek with John Latimer, and Leopold bench building demonstrations with John Beltman and Mike Claypool. It will be a special day dedicated to a man who wanted to inform and inspire people to see the natural world as a community to which we all belong.
